Today, more and more people have gotten serious about personal defense.

Quite frankly, there are no shortcuts or magic solutions to remaining safe.

To cut right to the chase, violence in itself can be either good or bad.

There are no shortcuts to self defense, and a gun is not a magic talisman that will keep danger away.

It all depends on the context of how it is applied.

A gangbanger beating up an elderly woman to steal her purse is the personification of evil.

A winners mindset is comprised of two elements: awareness and willingness.

Attacks can come from anywhere and at any time. Being aware and prepared is a must.

The second element is sometimes a bit more difficult to convey.

Willingness means that you are prepared to do whatever it takes to see that you prevail.

Responding to a deadly threat can take a variety of forms. A firearm can be part of an appropriate response, but awareness and proper training are critical.

While I respect those who have adopted a non-confrontational approach to aggression, I take a somewhat different view.

Defense of ones own life is not murder, and I will hang my hat on that.

The mental and psychological aspects of using force are something to be considered before taking up the gun.

This requires some serious soul-searching before taking that big step.

Pray we never find ourselves in that situation.
