One of my all-time favorite Springfield Armory pistols is the 1911 DS Prodigy.
This is a pistol with all the benefits of the 1911 platform, but in a double-stack 9mm configuration.
The Prodigy is incredibly easy to shoot, being both accurate and reliable.
Built for performance, the Springfield Armory Prodigy Comp (5″ at left, 4.25″ at right) is designed to excel. Its sleek profile and double-column magazine make it a standout on the range and in self-defense.
Boy, did it make a difference.

The comp redirects gas upwards, thereby reducing muzzle rise and enhancing control of the pistol.
The Prodigy Comp performs effortlessly in the author’s hands, showing its smooth trigger and recoil management. Built for the range and self-defense, it feels natural in action.
The comps benefits are most evident when firing quickly as the slide returns to zero faster and more efficiently.

Hands-On
I took out both models to the range, the 4.25 and the 5 version.
The Prodigy Comp combines Springfield Armory’s iconic craftsmanship with modern upgrades. This pistol offers accuracy and reliability right out of the box.
I set them up withVortex Defender-SToptics andSurefire X300 lights, and ran 115-gr.
ball ammo in the magazines.
Ive found that with compensated pistols, the lighter, faster-traveling 115-gr.
Focused and steady, the author puts the Prodigy Comp through its paces on the range. This pistol’s recoil control and smooth action make follow-up shots a breeze.
9mm performs really well in reducing the muzzle rise via the compensated porting.
Between the two, there is certainly a noticeable difference in the handling and felt recoil.
But, its also a tad snappier.
Sporting a rugged finish, the Prodigy Comp is made to withstand the rigors of constant use. This pistol combines durability with Springfield’s reputation for performance.
I am used to shooting the Hellcat and Echelon, which have that traditional striker-fired trigger feel.
Slight take up, squeeze through to the wall, break, reset.
The Prodigy has very little take-up, and then the break with very little reset.
Engineered for precision, the Springfield Armory Prodigy Comp features a crisp trigger and ergonomic grip. Every detail is tuned for an exceptional shooting experience.
The trigger is excellent.
In a lot of ways, the Prodigy Comp just feels like cheating.
With minimal effort, I am able to quickly place accurate rounds at distance on steel.
The smaller, lightweight nature of the pistol stands out to me.
I also prefer the snappier and quicker feel of the recoil impulse of a slightly shorter slide.
Be warned though, you may demand all your pistols be compensated going forward.
