In the long-range precision world, we chase sub-MOA groups.
Trailing close behind are modern gas guns, or semi-auto precision rifles usually in the AR pattern.
These guns are capable of extreme accuracy, comparable to that of a bolt gun.
The standard configuration M1A is well known for quite good accuracy. The Springfield Armory M1A Loaded Precision takes things to the next level.

But what about non-modern firearms?
Specifically, older gas guns?
What kind of accuracy should we expect out of something designed in the 1950s?
Springfield Armory designed the M1A Loaded Precision to offer exceptional accuracy right out of the box.
The M14 has legendary roots in military service at the squad level and as a designated marksman rifle.
For my accuracy testing, I chose the M1A Loaded Precisionchambered in .308with FDE furniture.
The optic I chose for this test was theVortex Venom 5-25x56mm.
Topping off the M1A in this accuracy test was the Vortex Venom 5-25x56mm variable power scope. It offers high-power magnification at a reasonable price.
For my bipod, I went with my tried-and-true B&T Atlas Bipod.
Its rock-solid and easy to use.
In fact, I have this bipod on every one of my long-range guns.
The author’s rifle is equipped with a Vortex scope and a B&T Atlas bipod. It is in this configuration that he was able to shoot .5 MOA.
The M1A Loaded Precision uses a rugged, customizableArchangel Precision Adjustable stock, 4- to 5-lb.
National Match Tuned trigger, as well as a 22 medium weight, air-gauged 1:11 right-hand-twist barrel.
The combination of these parts makes this rifle a force with which to be reckoned.
With a good optic and consistent application of the fundamentals, the M1A rifle is extremely accurate.
This aint your grandpas rifle.
I loaded some basic IMI ammo just to sight the optic in for this specific rifle.
I fired a few random shots around the target to get the feel of the trigger.
With Hornady American Whitetail ammo, the M1A Loaded Precision shot a 0.50″ group at 100 yards. That is amazingly good.
I am most used to a 2- to 3-lb.
I then loaded up a mag of the Hornady American Whitetail and prepared myself to shoot a tight group.
From my spotters view, they looked stacked.
We walked downrange with some calipers to check my handiwork.
Sure enough, I shot a .5 MOA group with my set-up.
The Archangel stock is very comfortable and allows for a great deal of adjustments to fit the shooter.
The Loaded Precision variant does a great job modernizing the venerable M1A.
