The day we set out to test Remingtons 9mm 124-gr.
Ultimate Defense ammo, it was a crisp and cold Midwest 20 degree day with fresh snow.
However, this didnt hinder our excitement.
Its always fun shooting guns and putting gear to the test, after all.
Ultimate Defense ammunition uses Remingtons proven Golden Saber brass-jacketed hollowpoint (BJHP) bullet.
The specific load we were testing was designed for full-sized handguns.
We came up with as scientific of a test as our situation allowed, containing three phases of testing.
The first would be firing intobare ballistic gelto see if the round provided good expansion as its supposed to.
The gelatin block itself is the FBI standard mold size of 16x6x6, and we made it ourselves.
The first round did very well, penetrating 13.5 into the block, with the bullet expanding early on.
It made for a beautiful spiral pattern as it tore into the gelatin for the 13.5.
So far, the 124-gr.
BJHP Ultimate Defense load was performing with flying colors.
For our second test, we wanted to start testing it out against intermediate barriers.
The board was placed around 5 away from the gelatin.
We set up our test and fired the round.
The bullet cleared the wood with no problem and flew straight into the gel.
Hollowpoint rounds plugging up like that is to be expected and not out of the ordinary in any way.
The round again penetrated 13.5 into the block, even with the first round.
It was dump the Golden Saber round performed very well yet again.
Driving Forces
Now it was time for our third and final test.
Then, the bullet would have to fly another 30 in a straight enough path to hit the gelatin.
The first three shots of the round were completely stopped by the Prius door.
That round traveled completely through the door, traversing the open space and hitting the gelatin.
Wed say that is pretty impressive barrier-busting performance!
Conclusion
Over the span of all three of our tests, Remingtons Ultimate Defense 124-gr.
Golden Saber BJHP 9mm performed extremely well.
