First of all,we took it on a Missouri Whitetail Hunt with Pro Outfitters.
Secondly, we took it to thefirst ever NRL Hunter Match.
Third, we have taken it out for some long-distance days on the range.
Shooting from a prone position can give the shooter better precision at extreme ranges.
But its important to remember that its not just a precision rifle.
So, whats the difference?
The Waypoint sports an optionallightweight carbon fiber-wrapped barrel, and all models come with a lightweight carbon fiber stock.
LaVelle had a chance to wring out the Waypoint at the first NRL Hunter Match.
A precision model would more than likely be equipped with something more like a bull barrel.
Also, the weight of the rifle stock would probably be heavier as well.
Having a rifle this light makes backpacking around in elk country something that wont break your back.
The Bushnell Elite Tactical XRS II scope is shown here mounted to the Waypoint with a set of Badger Ordnance scope rings.
The Waypoint barrel shoots great cold.
Reaching Out
You may be wondering how well this rifle shot at distance.
This potentially creates an issue as your muzzle velocity is a constantly changing variable.
The best tools give you the best chance of success. You still have to get behind the rifle and make your shot.
So, we brought a Magnetospeed with us to measure our velocity.
While the Waypoint doesnt have the weight of a PRS rifle, it does sure perform like one.
With a good spotter, shooting out to those distances served no challenge.
The Springfield Armory Model 2020 Waypoint rifle is proving to be an excellent platform for long-range shooting.
Im really hoping we see the Model 2020 in more traditional hunting rounds like .300 Win.
Mag., .270 Win.
Mag., .25-06, .30-06 .22-250, etc.
I have to admit as I key in that this Im getting excited just thinking about the possibilities!
Only time will tell, and Im excited to see what Springfield Armory will come up with!
