Depending on your flavor of shooting sport, one may be prioritized over the other.
In USPSA, recent rule changes have allowed all divisions to wear magazine carriers anywhere on the belt.
In IDPA, magazines must be stowed on the belt behind the centerline of the body.
Bullets backwards is not a winning technique at the highest levels of competition.
This turns the reload into a point the magazine into the gun grip.
This mag grab is the reason bullets backward doesnt work particularly well when reloading at speed.
Ready Recipient
The next premise of speed is going to be where you hold the empty gun.
Next, establish the position you should hold the gun to present the magazine.
Do it a few times the magazine should rest at the same spot each time.
This is where you better hold your gun for the reload.
check that your support hand index finger is properly over the end of the magazine.
Repeat this a few times until youre consistent and fast.
Your index finger must stay put on the frame cleanly out of the trigger guard while performing the reload.
Do not take your pointer finger from the tip of the magazine until it contacts the frame.
Last Moves
Now, the final step.
You should be beginning to prep the trigger as you reacquire sights on a specific point on the target.
Only introduce your finger onto the trigger once your sights are on target.
When the technique breaks down at a given speed, look harder at what changed and drill it up.
