The Scout Squad was designed and marketed for CQB self-defense and hunting in thick brush.
Only one way to find out!
Lets put the lead, brass, and copper to the test.
How far can an unmagnified red dot sight be used when paired with a rifle like the M1A Scout Squad? Would you believe “at least 500 yards”?
The Test
For this review, I choose to use Athlon Optics MIDAS LE GEN2.
To me, this rugged little optic was a perfect match for the Scout Squad!
I mounted the optic and zeroed it using Hornady .308 Win 168-gr.
A red dot sight is well-known to help with fast shots at close to medium ranges. The author proves that they can deliver accurate hits at 500 yards.
A-MAX Black to ensure maximum accuracy for the distance test.
I can consistently hit steel from 25 out to 300 yards.
I was shooting tight groups at 50 yards, and called it good with the sight.
For any kind of precision shooting, a stable platform is a requirement. This helps to ensure repeatable shots andaccurate hold-overs.
I then started pushing out from there to into the hundreds of yards.
Honestly, despite using a non-magnified optic, it was pretty easy to hit from the bench.
But what about standing?
For his testing, the author zeroed his rifle and red dot at 50 yards. A 50-yard zero served the author well throughout the shooting.
That increases the difficulty tenfold for me and most folks.
Dont take my word on any of this see for yourself and watch the video above.
A picture or, in this case, a video is worth a thousand words.
Accuracy with the Hornady A-Max Black ammo was excellent. At 50 yards and a red dot, this three-shot group was made after dialing in the optic.
And the Scout Squad certainly did its part!
Until next time onThe Armory Life, happy shooting and be safe.
The target may be barely visible at 500 yards, but it was enough. Repeatable shots on steel at this distance were accomplished by the author.
