The M14 represented a modernized update to the M1 Garand, with numerous upgrades and enhancements.
However, the most obvious change was the switch from theGarandsen-blocclip systemto the M14s detachable box magazine system.
Heres a quick look at one.
The T20 was a magazine-fed modification of the M1 Garand. Shown here is a gunsmith-modified M1 Garand converted to .308 Win. and adapted to use detachable box magazines.

Removing the trigger assembly reveals considerable modification, including the addition of the mag catch assembly.
With Garands flooding the market in the post-World War II years, skilled gunsmiths set up a cottage industry of modifying them.

At first glance, the modified Garand looks much like a standard model — except for that magazine.
A long magazine catch and forward magazine guide are visible on the converted Garand.
The Garand’s clip latch has been modified to act as a bolt release andbolt hold-open.
